impermanent image

a collaborative art project about change and impermanence. proudly Sydney based, featuring an unlimited number of contributors. on instagram @impermanentimage

from a blank canvas to......

----

...busy and beautiful - 27 participants and counting

the painting keeps changing, reflecting echoes of the past.and it will keep changing_-

proudly participatory

we started with a blank canvas. then someone added something. then someone else added something. then someone else added something, and on and on.each new addition builds and contrasts with what came before.

the magic of collaboration

the only rule is to paint something that speaks to you. everything else is up to you.----

every person is an artist

running this project has shown me that everyone, even those without art training, has something valuable and beautiful to contribute. whether with pen, spray paint, pencils or a brush, participants have added beautiful and meaningful additions to the canvas.---

about the artist(s)

impermanent image was started by sydney artist and writer alexander webb. his work has been featured in the new york times and national geographic. it has been added to by many other people, from strangers to friends and family,he wanted to create an artwork that everyone from friends to strangers could contribute to. it draws strength and inspiration from impermanence, highlighting both the importance of the moment of creation and the echoes of the past that continue in the work, even if they are not directly seen.most importantly, the work draws on the power of participation, breaking down the barriers that sometimes separate artists and people who don't realize they are artists.

an expanded vision

we hope to bring impermanent image to the broader sydney community with a large-scale participatory work for everyone. public-facing and collaborative, we hope to get thousands of sydneysiders to add to a new canvas. we will document each stage of the work, creating a democratic, collaborative, and inclusive artistic piece for the people of sydney

a never ending project

as the project continues, new layers are added, new memories are made, and new people contribute. it has been so much richer and fulfilling than I thought it would be. whatever happens next, I know change is coming---
